Vintage wooden quills wrapped with cotton thread instead of wool yarn.  Originally these quills were wrapped with wool yarn and placed into a large wooden fly shuttle to weave wool fabric on a giant loom.  Those mills are now long closed and gone. 

These quills are a remembrance of those days gone by and make a pretty decoration in your sewing room.  I have used them to hang a small wall quilt to display too....nice.
